On April 10th, the signing ceremony of the Model Confucius Institute co-established by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) was held at the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Kim In-Chul, President of HUFS, Park Heung-Soo, Foreign Director of the Model Confucius Institute, Miao Chunmei, Chinese Director of the Model Confucius Institute, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Jia Dezhong, Vice President of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) were present.

At the ceremony, Ma Jianfei spoke highly of the achievements made by the Confucius Institute at HUFS in recent years, and extended gratitude to President Kim In-Chul for his support for the Confucius Institute. He noted that the Confucius Institute Headquarters is shoring up the construction the Model Confucius Institute to facilitate the transitional development of Confucius Institutes worldwide while improving quality and efficiency. He also suggested the Model Confucius Institute at HUFS give full play to Chinese language teaching and the studies of China, leverage innovative teaching methods by means of intelligence and networking, set up innovative classes, so as to make new breakthroughs in Chinese language teaching and China-Korea cultural exchanges and set an example for the development of the Confucius Institutes in Korean and the world at large.

Kim In-Chul expressed gratitude to the Confucius Institute Headquarters and BFSU for their support and help for the development of the Confucius Institute at HUFS. He noted that the honor of being approved to establish the Model Confucius Institute reflects the trust of the Confucius Institute Headquarters in HUFS. The Model Confucius Institute, while carrying on the schooling mission of “Valuing both teaching and researching, and advancing language and culture together”, will innovate its courses, operate with characteristics, and develop itself into a new window for Korean students and citizens to learn Chinese language and culture, thus contributing to the spreading of Chinese language and culture and the training of Chinese language teachers in Korea.

The Confucius Institute at HUFS, co-established by BFSU and HUFS, was inaugurated on October 31st, 2009. Depending on its own advantages, the Confucius Institute at HUFS has been improving and optimizing its operation, opening and innovating various Chinese language courses at all levels according to the characteristics and needs of Korean students for a decade. In recent years, the Confucius Institute and its teaching sites have witnessed a steadily growth in the number of students signing up for courses, as well as remarkable achievements in improving the quality of Chinese language teaching and the promotion of Chinese culture. On-the-job training of volunteers and local teachers has been held continuously for years, contributing to the Chinese language teaching in Korea. The Confucius Institute at HUFS pledges to make persistent efforts, remain committed to serving local society and sister schools, develop its own characteristics and carry out fruitful cooperation in all fields while giving full play to its demonstrative role.
